there once was a

good christian girl
who had all the answers

it was so very simple
quite quite clear

the bible made it so

it all went according to plan
for well over three decades

and then something happened

what happened?
books happened

okay and a lot of other stuff 
but mostly books

so so so soooooo many books

This is a poem (technically, parts of three poems smashed together) from my book, unbelieve. I write a lot about the books that woke me up out of my white conservative evangelical slumber and changed the trajectory of my life.

And I will be reading books and writing about them for the rest of my life—particularly books by BIPOC, since I spent the first 40 years of my life reading mostly white authors.
