“it’s a god thing!” I just spent three beautiful days with four beautiful friends two I knew, two I’d just met and we shared a common bond (we’d each gotten out of the cult of evangelical christianity) so many weird, wild, magical things happened in 72 hours and we tried so hard to find an adequate substitute for the ol’ christian platitude we’d all come to loathe but we failed so we just reclaimed the original words and made them our own and instead of saying them reverently, we yelled them and then died laughing of happiness * Shout-out to Corrie, Danielle, Nicki, and Ruth! Richmond on 12! (The 5 of us were in Denver, CO with a whole bunch more wonderful women.) p.s. There’s actually a poem in my book, unbelieve, with an almost identical title: "a God thing" not only did my faith shift but my language shifted right along with it I stopped using hundreds of canned phrases and added a few choice words many of them with four letters and yes the words from the can still trigger me * If you too left evangelicalism, what christianese jargon makes you cringe?

Thank you for putting this experience into words! "God has a plan" always irritates me. These days, I replace that phrase with things like, "That sucks" or "You didn't deserve that" or "I hope another better opportunity comes along" or "You deserve happiness," etc., as appropriate for the situation.
My Mom says "Don't let Satan steal your joy" ALL the time and I HATE/LOATHE, despise, cringe, ugh at it.
