reverse missionary it took me five years of living in a southeast Asian country to realize how white and western we’ve made god I used to tell people they were sinners and needed Jesus now I tell Jesus-followers they’re sinning against people and need to make reparations I want Black and Indigenous people to reclaim what white christians stole—their land, labor, bodies, rituals, dances the list is forever long we have to give it back give it back give it back
This poem is so good. I was never good at evangelism but often dreamt in my fundy youth of being a missionary. Now all I can see is the colonialism and supremacy of the Western God and the violence done to indigenous cultures and I mourn my participation in it
I find courage on my deconstruction journey from you and love that I came across your writing. Can’t wait to read your book! Thank you for sharing your voice (:
hi Marla, i'm Douglas, BTh, a Missions Major. I also don't believe in missionaries or the missions endeavour anymore. i stopped believing in the work of missionaries about the time you were becoming a missionary. At that point, i still believed in people, and now only believe in individuals. so glad that you write these poems as a lovely individual.
