ten years ago time for our nightly bedtime story from The Jesus Storybook Bible “Abraham sacrifices Isaac” my 10-year-old sees the page before I begin Ava: oh no!
So many of the stories in the Bible are so unsuitable for children, and yet we try to excuse them, defend them, bowdlerise them, or make cute little toys from them (think the Ark and animals here).
This idea reminds me of a poem I wrote about what forms a community and how my family functioned in it. This is an excerpt from Ten Landscapes as Community as Home published in 2008 where I reference the almost sacrifice of Issac...
One of the things I love about this poem is how it showcases the immense growth you've been on in your journey! Cheers to lifelong learning and growing out of unjust systems!
We read the Jesus storybook Bible together too and I remember the first time we read about Jesus being crucified and the horror on my daughter's face. I wish I could take that night back. I thought I was doing the right thing.
