I don’t have a church background but I’ve never understood why churches spend so much time advocating against the queer community. IMO, most religious people I’ve met are doing more damage than any queer person. Two weeks ago I went to a book convention of all queer or ally authors and fans and it was the most amazing time. I’m an ally and even I felt so welcomed. I’ve spent most of the last two years reading mainly queer romance, and guess what: we’re all the same. Human.
I'm always so jealous of people who tell me they don't have a church background. What I hear: "I'm free of religious baggage." LUCKY DUCK!! I don't often make time to read fiction, but I love queer romance. Just got Jasmine Guillory's Flirting Lessons from the library.
I remember the moment I thought, “wait…if Christians believe gay marriage isn’t real, why are we wasting so much energy on destroying an imaginary threat?!” It was the realization that we didn’t want to let people be people that started my departure from white supremacist evangelism.

"Imaginary threats" are exactly what evangelical Christians spend an inordinate amount of time on. I'm so over it.
